Who are the social work interns?
Destiny Newman and Rahima Cantave are 4th-year students studying Social Work, and they are entering the last stretch of their final year at the University of South Florida. This blog will highlight their experiences as interns at the Office of Community Engagement and Partnership (OCEP).
OCEP exists to expand and strengthen university–community engagement* locally and globally in support of USF's strategic priorities to: change lives for the better, produce well-educated and highly skilled global citizens, and create new partnerships that enhance student access to academic programs, research, and employment opportunities.

What is community engagement?
Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. |

What are engaged outreach and partnerships?
Community outreach efforts include a continuum of mutually beneficial involvement and engagement with the community, ranging from one-time efforts , time-limited activities , to ongoing partnerships that result in mutual capacity building. |
First week Reflectionjanuary 10, 2019Our first day began with a lot of anxiety about what this internship would hold. Our first task was to sit in on the weekly staff meeting where we got the opportunity to meet the lovely OCEP staff and hear about the projects each member of the team was working on. We also sat in on a meeting one of the office community partners, Metropolitan Ministries. In this meeting, we learned that the partnership between USF and Metropolitan Ministries is extensive and has been in existence from as early as 1995. Sitting in on these meetings gave us a good idea about the kinds of issues that are going on in the community and the role our office plays in supporting local organizations ....
Through our placement at the Office for Community Engagement, I have noticed that my participation in USF sponsored events has greatly increased. Prior to this semester I rarely came to the center of campus and really missed out on a lot of great involvement opportunities. At this internship, we have been encouraged to ...
